Our History

This year we will be celebrating our 100th Anniversary!

In The Beginning ...

Since its founding in 1911, the Association's motto has been... "The purity of the lake; the welfare of the town."  The SLA campaigned for an East Shore Road; it was involved, with Canadian neighbors, in the first massive campaign against Acid Rain; the Association stopped the use of harmful pesticides near the shore; it helped maintain the concept of sustainable and environmentally safe development.  The Association has funded the testing of the lake and the harvesting of invasive plants like purple loosestrife and Eurasian Water Milfoil.  And it once prevented the lake from disappearing altogether as you will see in our pamphlet, The Rescue of a Lake Called Schroon.
