Help Wanted
Posted: 3/16/2020
Last year the SLA initiated an ambitious sonar project to survey the lake bottom to identify areas that may support invasive species and is currently looking for help. The mapping process uses a Lowrance sonar plotter requiring a small boat and motor operating at < 5 mph with minimal wake. The plotter records a 30 ft wide path on a small disc that is then uploaded into a database where it is converted to depth, vegetation and density maps and reports. In 2019 the riparian area of the lake from the Narrows north was mapped and uploaded and found shallow areas that can support aquatic invasives.
What's needed:
- Volunteers with small boat / Data collection,
- Volunteers to upload and combine files,
- Equipment maintenance & coordination, i.e., battery charging and transfer of sonar equipment to collection volunteers.
Note 1 & 2 could be different individuals.
The Chartplotter, mounting hardware, batteries, data chips, etc., are supplied including training. For more information and If you can help with this project, please contact us at info@schroonlakeassociation.org.
