CLOUDSPLITTER FOUNDATION AWARDS $10,000 GRANT FOR FIGHTING INVASIVES TO THE TOWN OF SCHROON AND TWO LAKE ASSOCIATIONS

The Cloudsplitter Foundation today awarded $10,000 to the Town of Schroon, The Schroon Lake Association and the Paradox Lake Association to aid in their fight against the spread of invasive species to Schroon and Paradox Lakes. The money will help support an Invasives Decontamination Station purchased for the town by the SLA and PLA which organizations provided financial assistance to the Town for operating the station this year.

The “decon station,” which removes invasives from boats.  using high pressure hot water is part of a state wide program to prevent invasive plants and animals from spreading on boats, in their bilges and on their trailers. The station operates from 6 am to 6 pm daily is free and open to the public. With this station, the Town hopes to prevent the spread of invasives from other more contaminated lakes like Lake Champlain and Lake George to Schroon and Paradox.

The Cloudsplitter Foundation awarded the grant on Wednesday August 15 at 12:30 pm to Mike Marnell, Schroon Town Supervisor, Mark Granger SLA President and Marcia Hartnett PLA President. Foundation Representative Chenelle Palyswiat stated “the Cloudsplitter Foundation is pleased to support these efforts to prevent the spread of invasives and educate the public on this critical issue.” Town Supervisor Mike Marnell thanked the two Lake Organizations for their support and PLA President Marcia Harnett pledged that with assistance from organizations like Cloudsplitter, help would continue.

“As we celebrate this public/private effort, we note that the boat decon station has already removed lake killing invasives from over 130 boats to date.” remarked Mark Granger SLA President. “One of those boats was infested with zebra mussels.” SLA Board VP and Town Board Member Roger Friedman lauded the program and pointed out that support from Cloudsplitter will help prevent much larger and more expensive problems on the Schroon watershed.

Granger closed by pledging continuing vigilance to reduce the spread of invasives but noted that the grant only covered about 10% of this year’s cost. “to keep our watershed clean we need strong support from the State, Town and our community every year.”
